The Moray Coast line is a varied coast line that runs across the top of the Scottish Central Highlands. The geological formations and beaches vary considerably from pristine golden sand beaches with maram grass dunes to rocky granite protruding headlands.
As well as the geological features the next obvious subject is that of the water itself, as the sea is a part of the North Sea we can expect differing conditions across the coastline as we move either East or West. If we are lucky we may encounter a storm swell for some dramatic wave formations!
The most iconic location that will be of interest to anyone is that of Bow Fiddle Rock, so called because it looks like the tip of a violinist’s bow protruding from the sea. But there are other dramatic sea arches and points along the coastline which will fill our itinerary easily!
As well as the grand vistas, we will focus on some of the more intimate and interesting scenes that the sea can give us, such as the interaction between the water and sand.
We will try and make the most of the weather conditions moving from location to location along the coast line. The majority of the day we will be using the car to get as close as possible to our prospective subjects.
If you have looked at the Forests and Lochs Guided Landscape Photography Day, then you will have noticed that this experience is a little more expensive and that is just to account for the extra fuel needed to get us to the coast line, and the extra time.
Because the coast line is a little way from Aviemore, this day will typically begin at 08:00 in the morning. I will collect you from your accommodation and we will begin the journey to our first location on the coast, hopefully arriving between 09:30 and 10:00 depending on which location I have chosen based on the weather conditions. I will arrive with a plan ready and we will discuss as we drive through the Spey Valley (if there is a subject that you would like to photograph along the way, then just tell me and I will stop).
We will be on location until sunset, as all photographers want to capture the wonderful colours. In the summer months this tour may start a little later than 08:00 because sunset is not until 22:00 and it will be too long for the both of us! In general we are aiming for about 12-14 hours of photography, including time for lunch and travel.
I will confirm the starting time when you book the activity.
In the car there will be a box of fresh fruit and a box of chocolate bars, and some hot water to make hot drinks, such as coffee, tea or hot chocolate. You are welcome to help yourself and we will take regular breaks.
You will need to bring your own packed lunch for the day, but if you are unable to bring a lunch we can stop at a supermarket or shop for you to buy your lunch for the day.
Depending on your level of photography, I can give you as much tuition as you desire. If there are some things of which you are a bit unsure, please do not hesitate to ask me about them. I am there to help you achieve what you want out of photography.
I will show you some tips and tricks that I have been using when taking pictures, and we will look over composition and finding the subject in the landscape.
That being said, if you know what you are doing and only need some help finding locations then I am sure you will enjoy a day of photography in Scotland.
We will talk about some techniques that I use when I photograph the coastline, such as Intentional Camera Movement and slow exposures to create abstract images.
We will talk about optimum weather for seascape photography and ways we can plan photography days out to try and maximise our opportunities in the field.
Payment will be taken at the time of booking via bank transfer or Stripe to secure your dates
Fitness Level
As mentioned above this day is quite an easy day, in general the locations I recommend are only a few hundred metres from the car. If you are able to walk further, then we will be able to get to some more unique locations. The beaches are often un-even ground and can contain holes, so if you are a little unstable I will be on hand to help you get in to position.
